GIF is short for Graphic Interchange Format - a small 8 bit (or 256 color) image format which is a fairly fast download on the net. GIF's are useful because they have very small file sizes and can be used to create short animations; however, they have a lower picture quality than other file formats. Check Choose the Correct Graphics File Format to see if you should be using a GIF.
Steps
- 1Open up Microsoft Paint in the accessories folder on your Start menu.
- 2Create your image that you wish to make into a GIF.
- 3Click File>Save and choose where you want to save the image.
- 4Click on "Save as type:" and choose GIF.
- 5Choose "Yes" if a box appears asking you about color loss.
Tips
- Editing images may cause irreversible changes, so be sure to save the original picture before editing it.
- To check the extension of an image, right click the image and select properties. The type of file should be the first item listed.
- Using software such as the GIMP or Photoshop, you can create "animated" GIFs; capable of flashing, or dancing around your screen.
- Keep your image simple, as GIF only allows a maximum of 256 colors as it is a compressed image format.
